Top 12 Pointers We Recommend You Check When Inspecting A Used Car

Body and paint

Thoroughly inspect the car body for any damage (rust, dents, ripples, etc.) and make sure the doors, boot, or tailgate close and stay closed.

Interior

Check the interior for stains or damage, making sure you check the visors (these are often overlooked) and the glove box.

Vehicle identification

Check the car's vehicle identification number (VIN) matches the VIN on the registration papers. You don't want to find out later that you've purchased a stolen car.

Engine oil

The car's service book should tell you if a vehicle has had regular services. If there are any gaps, don't be afraid to ask about them. When you check the oil, the dipstick should show clean, honey-coloured (not black) oil.

Engine

Ensure the engine runs smoothly and quietly while driving and sitting idle.

Radiator coolant

Ensure the engine is cool, then remove the radiator coolant cap. The coolant should be clean and brightly coloured (usually green or red).

Tyres

The tyres should be in good condition without signs of damage or uneven wear and with tread depth above the minimum wear indicators. Don't forget to check the spare tyre.

Exhaust

Coloured smoke from the exhaust indicates an engine problem, so ensure the engine is running smoothly and not producing smoke.

Seatbelts

All seatbelts need to be in good working order.

Lights

Check all lights – head- and taillights, indicators, park lights, reverse, and number plate lights.

Dashboard display

The display should be working without any visible warning lights illuminated on the panel.

Equipment

Check all the accessories work (air-conditioning, power windows, mirrors, audio system, satellite navigation, parking sensors, and reversing camera), and don't forget to ensure the jack and any tools are in place and in working condition.

Why buy a vehicle from a used car dealer?

Typically, a used car dealer will offer a wide range of used vehicles to choose from, all in excellent working order and ready to drive off the lot. This saves you time and gives you peace of mind knowing the car you are buying is worth it.
