Top 6 Car Wash Tips That You Should Know

There's nothing better than a clean, fresh car but if getting your used car professionally detailed is out of your budget, read on for our top tips on washing your vehicle.

Regularly washing your car helps protect it from the elements and keeps it looking its best. Here are some tips on how to clean your car at home.

Get the right tools

The right tools will indeed make the job easier. At the very least, make sure you have:

Exterior:

  • Hose with a variable nozzle
  • Soft sponge
  • Car washing liquid
  • Microfibre cloths
  • Chamois cloth for drying
  • Interior:

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Window cleaner

  • Car cleaning products gently remove dirt and grime without scratching your car's paint, so it's worth investing in a good quality product.

Choose a sheltered spot to wash your car

Washing your car on a warm, sunny day makes the water and cleaning products dry quickly, often leaving waters spots and soap residue on your paintwork and windows. Aim to wash your car on an overcast day and park your vehicle on a flat surface where you can open all the doors to access and clean the interior.

    Start with the wheels

Start from the ground up! The wheels are typically the dirtiest part of your car, so get down on your hands and knees and give them a good scrub. Use a water-based, non-corrosive wheel cleaner for your used car wheels. Once the rest of the car is clean, make sure you dry your wheels with a clean microfibre cloth.

    Cleaning the exterior

Start by spraying the whole car with the hose to get it wet, then wash each section of the vehicle, moving from top to bottom. Gently run any stubborn dirt or grime to remove it, then rinse the car off, using a hose without a nozzle. Known as the sheeting method, the low water pressure from the hose allows water to flow gently from the top of the car down. Lastly, use a quality chamois cloth or microfibre towel to dry your car before applying any waxes or protective coatings.

    Cleaning the windows

Standard glass and tinted glass have different cleaning requirements. Use a car-specific product rather than household window cleaners. Spray the product straight onto the surface and wipe with a microfibre cloth to avoid the spray dripping.

    Cleaning the interior

  • Remove all rubbish
  • Remove floor mats and shake or vacuum to remove dirt. You can also scrub them with soap and hot water and let them dry before putting them back in the car.
  • Vacuum the interior, including the front and back seats, the floor, under the pedals, and the side door panels.
  • Use a microfibre cloth to wipe away dirt, dust, and grime.
  • Clean cup holders.
  • Use a specialised cleaning solution to remove stains on seats and carpets, then wipe clean with a wet cloth.

  • There you go, now you have a clean and beautiful car.
